What the name Plain-Hearted means  It is named after Chimonanthus praecox f. concolor, a variety of wintersweet called soshin rōbai in Japanese. Since the word soshin literally means a plain heart, the Japanese name can be translated as plain-hearted wintersweet. This deciduous tree tells us an approaching spring with its bulb-shaped, bright yellow flowers blooming into bitterly cold air in a still bleak field or garden in mid-January to early February. The name conveys the operator's intention to face every text plain-heartedly in translating it. |
